Chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry and biology to solve problems in the production of chemicals, fuel, pharmaceuticals, and many other products. They design processes and equipment for large-scale manufacturing, plan and test production methods and byproducts treatment, and direct facility operations. Most chemical engineers have a bachelors degree in chemical engineering, as well as internship experience. The average salary for chemical engineers was $97,360 as reported the US Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2015.

Biomedical engineers design equipment, devices, computer systems, and software used in healthcare. Bachelors degree programs in bioengineering include extensive lab-work, and courses such as fluid mechanics, computer programming, chemistry courses, and biomaterials. The median annual wage for biomedical engineers was $86,220 in May 2015. Further, employment of biomedical engineers is projected to grow 23% in the next decade, faster than the average for all occupations.

Robotics Engineering

Robots are well-suited to perform tasks that are dangerous and often repetitive, as well as to function in extreme environments such as space, under the oceans, or at high altitudes. NASA tests robots for exploration in areas called analogs. Analogs are places where the environment is similar to locations like Mars or the moon, where a robot may be used. Another field in which robots are finding a niche is in medical applications. Although still in its infancy, robotic surgery has already proven itself to be of great value, particularly in areas inaccessible to conventional laparoscopic procedures. Robotic technology is set to revolutionize surgery by improving and expanding laparoscopic procedures, minimizing invasiveness, and allowing remote operation.

Robots all have some kind of mechanical construction, a frame, form or shape designed to achieve a particular task. For example, a robot designed to travel across heavy dirt or mud, might use caterpillar tracks. There must also be electrical components which power and control the machinery. For example, the robot with caterpillar tracks would need some kind of power to move the tracker treads. The electrical aspect of robots is used for movement via motors, with built-in sensors delivering electrical signals in order to measure things like sound, position, and even basic vision. The control of a robot involves three distinct tasks, perception, processing, and motion (actuation). Sensors give information about the environment or the robot itself. This information is then processed or transmitted, and used to calculate the appropriate signals to the actuators (motors, ie muscles) which move the mechanical robot. Therefore, robots must be programmed much like any other computing device.

Technical programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular four-year university, and you can earn good money as a highly-skilled, technical specialist. If you remain true to your career interests, via Hilbert College early childhood education, your overall job earnings will increase as you gain experience. If you're currently employed, you can take online technical education classes in your free time to advance your career. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, utilizing interactive platforms such as Blackboard, and mobile apps. For example, Khan Academy now offers free lecture videos served through YouTube. Then there's Surry Community College aerospace engineering courses online, with enrolled students from around the world.

Financial Aid Information

Government scholarships and Pell grant applications, combined with academic scholarships, only account for a third of total college aid. Student loans, work-study earnings, and personal savings make up the remaining two-thirds. The official FAFSA website is www.fafsa.ed.gov and is free to use. Filing taxes early is recommended, but using estimates for FAFSA from previous years is possible provided the correct data is updated later. According to the US Department of Education, nearly 45 million Americans incurred student debt during their college career.

Student loans often carry an origination fee. Origination fees are a one-time charge based on the amount of the loan. Financial aid may be administered via the Department of Education or through your school's financial aid office. High school grades are the most important factor in gaining admission to the college of your choice, along with letters of recommendation. According to Georgia Highlands College double major, an ideal academic record consists of a high GPA in courses of progressive difficulty. The College Board Scholarship Search service advertises several thousand sources for possible scholarship funds. Trade unions may offer scholarships for union members and their dependent children.

Business & Engineering Jobs

As the economy improves, many private firms are beginning to hire more technical personnel. Whether you are a new college grad, or have technical experience, this is an excellent time to seek a new career. The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam.
